OMG this dip. I had seen the inspiration on another blog and was immediately drawn in by the idea of slowly caramelized onions. Yum! I wanted my version to be utterly delicious (obviously!), creamy, and bursting with flavor but also higher in protein so that when you are serving this as a starter, it is a nice way to balance your blood sugar levels before maybe having a bit more food. Whether you are planning a game night, party, a movie night or simple snacking at home – elevate your snack game with this delicious Crowd-Pleasing Caramelized Onion Dip.

How to Make the Perfect Caramelized Onions

The key to making the perfect caramelized onions is to give them a medium-high heat in a non-sticking pan and some time to caramelize down. You will have to render them down with a bit of water, and we are adding balsamic vingar for further caramelization. This not only provides some really great flavor, but also adds a natural sweetness without needing to add sugar.

The beauty of this dip is that you do not have to make it last minute, but it can easily be prepared the morning of or a night before. If you are preparing it the night prior, I would personally mix the herbs under last minute.

Why Onions are Super Good (or a Super Food)

Onions belong to the same family as leeks, garlic, and shallots. They are incredibly nutritious, containing both vitamin C and potassium. In addition, they are also an anti-oxidant power house! Said antioxidants have been shown to reduce your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Onions are also high in an antioxidant called “quercetin”. Quercetin belongs to the flavonoid antioxidant group. It is anti-inflammatory and may also lower blood pressure levels. All of these benefits are absolutely amazing and great for your heart health. In addition, some smaller studies have shown that onions can reduce certain types of cancer, particularly in the stomach and colorectal area. Not too bad for the humble onion, am I right?!

This recipe is gluten-free, nut-free, and vegetarian. Due to the cottage cheese used, it is not vegan. You could swap the cottage cheese for a vegan version though.

This crowd pleasing caramelized onion dip is easy to make and bursting with flavor. Perfect for a game night, party, or movie night. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • For the caramelized onions
  • 1 tsp olive oil

  • 1 large white onion

  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

  • A little bit of wanter

  • For the caramelized onion dip
  • 200 gr. cottage cheese

  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

  • 1 tsp mustard

  • A very large handful of chopped chives

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • To serve
  • Cut up cucumbers

  • Other veggies

  • Nachos

How to

  • For the caramelized onions
  • In a non-sticking frying pan, gently heat the olive oil to medium heat. Meanwhile, peel and finely slice the onion (I used a medallion – also makes the process quicker). Add to the pan, along with a little bit of salt and fry. Be sure to stir from time to time
  • Once you start seeing that caramelization, continue to stir and add a bit of water. Repeat the process, until you have a nice, even caramelization. Lastly, add the balsamic vinegar and continue to stir. Set aside and let cool
  • For the caramelized onion dip
  • Add the cottage cheese to a bowl. I like mine really fine, so I used a mixer in order to grind it down, but you do not have to. Finely cut the caramelized onions (once cool) and add along with the balsamic vinegar, mustard, chopped chives, and salt and pepper. Mix well
  • To serve
  • like this dip with cut up veggies (cucumbers are awesome) or some nachos. Enjoy!

Notes

  • You can easily prepare the caramelized onions up to a day prior before finalizing the dip.
