This Red Berry Pudding (“Rote Grütze”) used to be one of my favorite summer treats. There is nothing better than a cold, delicious rote Grütze when it is hot outside. I had a massive craving for it a few weeks ago, but the days of buying one which includes loads of starches, sugars, and additional fillers felt over. So, I looked at a recipe and played with it to make it with less sugar and gluten-free. It turned out brilliantly and I have made it quite a few times since, because it is simply so easy to make!

What Is a Red Berry Pudding (“Rote Grütze”)?
Rote Grütze (pronounced ROH-tuh GRUET-suh) is a classical dessert in both Scandinavia and Northern Germany. It is made from red berries and cooked into a pudding or compote-like consistency. The translation means “red groats” which refers to how it used to be made originally, using groats to thicken the mixture. Nowadays, it is more common to use a combination of red berries and some form of starch, which we will keep gluten-free in our version.

What Are Typical Ingredients In a Red Berry Pudding?
Red berry puddings are usually a sweet-tart dessert made from red berries. However, what kind of berries you are using is totally up to you. I used a mixture of blueberries, blackberries, and mainly currants, as they provide that tart flavor. However, you could also use cherries, strawberries, raspberries, or black currants. The beauty of this recipe is that you can create and make it seasonal all year long! If you are using larger fruits such as strawberries, blackberries, or cherries, be sure to roughly chop or cut them so that all the berries have a similar size.

Why Is This Red Berry Pudding (“Rote Grütze”) Good For You?
Berries!! Need I say more?! Amongst one of the most nutritious foods you can eat – they are an absolute nutritious powerhouse which you do not want to miss. Berries are loaded with antioxidants and highly anti-inflammatory, which help to protect your body against free radicals, and DNA damage. Berries are also excellent in fiber, both the soluble and insoluble kinds. You know that I rave about fiber all the time. It both allows everything to pass through nicely in your gut and tract, cleanses, and provides the good bacteria in your gut with feeding ground. If you need any more convincing, in initial test tube and humans studies, berries have also been shown to increase insulin sensitivity and protect your cells against high blood sugar levels. What more does one want?
