Optional Add-Ins for These Delicious Gluten-free Warm, Fudgy Mug Brownies
Now, I am already including a bit of chopped chocolate, as well as raspberries. Both of these flavor combinations work brilliantly! Some other excellent options are chopped nuts, for example pecans or walnuts work super well. For a little bit of a “minty” twist, you could also add a drop of peppermint or two into the mix. Alternatively, a teaspoon of orange zest can add a really nice citrusy and fresh twist.

Why Cocoa Powder is Good for Us
Cocoa powder. It is not only delicious but it also contains some really good-for-you benefits that I wanted to mention. First off, it is loaded with polyphenols. Polyphenols are a type of antioxidant that reduces free radicals in our bodies and thereby also reduces oxidative stress. It is also anti-inflammatory. High levels of oxidative stress on our bodies can lead to a lot of what is now known as “Western diseases”, namely heart disease, stroke, diabetes II, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, cocoa contains flavanols, which have been shown to increase nitric oxide levels in your bloodstream, and enhances the function of blood vessels. This, in turn, potentially lowers your blood pressure. The same flavanols have been shown to reduce your “bad” cholesterol levels, which also further reduces your risk of stroke and heart disease. Remember that cocoa powder can act as a stimulant in people who are very sensitive to coffee. If you belong to this group, be sure to not consume it too close to nighttime!

Easy Swaps and Questions
Are these gluten-free warm, fudgy mug brownies without flour? Yes. These brownies do not need flour. First off, this makes them naturally more fudgy and dense, which is what we are going for. Second, it means they are naturally gluten-free. Just be sure to check that none of the other ingredients you are using contain gluten (they should not!), especially if you are cooking for someone with celiac disease.
Can I swap the almond butter for a different kind of nut butter? Yes you can. Cashew butter should also work well. For a nut-free version, I suggest sunflower butter. As sunflower butter tends to be less sweet, I suggest adding a bit more xylit, around 4 tablespoons.
How do I know if my mug brownies are done? Any brownie can go from “undercooked” to “overcooked” very, very quickly. We do not want this with this version, because the slight undercooking is what provides the fudgy side of things. Start checking early and be sure to insert a toothpick. It should come out with a few crumbs attached to it. That is when you know it is perfect.

How to adjust these gluten-free warm, fudgy mug brownies to your dietary requirements
This recipe is gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan. You can easily make it nut-free by using a nut-free non-dairy milk and sunflower seed butter instead of almond butter.
