You guys!! This is such an oldy but goody recipe!! I first developed these Sweet Potato Wedges for my Culinary Nutrition Expert program. We have made them countless times since!! The spicing is out of this world and they are so, so flavorful! You could just as easily use “regular” potatoes if you fancied. They are the ultimate comfort food for me. They feel so homey, delicious, and “snacky” if I want to. I truly enjoy them as a snack or as part of a larger meal.

Next to this awesome spice coating (my god – I was munching away whilst shooting these), something else is really important to make these great. The secret to sweet potato wedges is always to use LESS oil. I know, I know. You might be thinking this is counter-intuitive. But I promise you – it is not. You only want them to go crispy. Too much oil will make them super soggy and they will not crisp up.

That is also the reason, why you have to cover the wedges in spices first, before adding the oil. Else, it is tempting to think there is little oil there and you just want to add more. Do not be fooled and please follow my advice on this one. You could even add a bit of arrowroot starch, in order to soak up any potential excess moisture.

Why are these Sweet Potato Wedges good for you?
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet Potatoes are super delicious and an absolute gem when it comes to their nutritional profile! They are super high in vitamin A, C, manganese, copper, and several of the B vitamins. Sweet potatoes are stock-full of antioxidant superpower. The orange variety contains a lot of beta carotene (which gets converted in our bodies into vitamin A). Recent studies have shown that beta-carotene conversion is a lot higher if eaten with a bit of fat. Well, lucky for you – that is definitely the case with this recipe. That means you can re-amp the full benefit of both beta-carotene and vitamin A. Vitamin A is fantastic for your eye health, your immune system, and helps your organs to function optimally.

In addition, the purple variety has a unique antioxidant profile that is worth mentioning. They are not only highly anti-inflammatory, but when they pass through our digestive tract, they may lower health risks that are potentially caused by heavy metals and/or oxidized radicals. Wow!! By the way – you cannot tell by the color of the sweet potato’s skin how purple it will be. There is a gene that gets activated, but scientists have not found the exact process just yet.
Sweet Potatoes are also surprisingly awesome at regulating blood sugar levels. They are loaded with dietary fiber, which slows down the digestion process. They also contain a protein hormone called “adiponectin”. This hormone is produced by our fat cells, and modifies insulin metabolism. Whereas certainly more research needs to go into this area, it is nevertheless exciting for all Sweet Potato lovers.

How can I adjust these Sweet Potato Wedges to my dietary requirements?
